Salumeria : Philosophy

The real taste of Italy is available in Leeds at Salvo's Salumeria, Leeds' first Salumeria. Opened in 2005, our Salumeria has established a strong following amongst customers new and old. For those that may be asking what is a Salumeria - well a Salumeria is an Italian delicatessen. Salume is Italian for cured meat products like prosciutto and salame. We also offer a café within the Salumeria and serve light meals as well as being fully licensed.

It all started from supplying friends and family with tinned tomatoes and buffalo ricotta as it’s so hard to find genuine quality Italian food in the UK, especially in the north. There’s so much processed and factory food around in the supermarkets these days. Over the last couple of years, we have been speaking to producers of genuine foodstuffs and small artisan producers who produce natural products using traditional methods. It’s been a natural progression and finally we’re able to share this wonderful produce with everyone! All we want is to have a place where people can shop for real food with confidence.

When you visit our Salumeria, just 2 doors down from Salvo's restaurant, you will discover a vast range of choice. Cheeses, many unpasturised, from Sardinia to Piedmont to Sicily, mozzarella from Salerno, Mum's home province and the birthplace of buffalo mozzarella. It’s hand made stuff delivered weekly and is absolutely divine. Then there’s the buffalo ricotta. It’s very low in fat but very rich and creamy. It’s made from the whey of mozzarella. We use it as an alternative to butter and with low fat and salt it’s a guilt free treat! Capers in olive oil from Pantelleria, a small volcanic island off the coast of Italy, reputed to be the best capers in the world. Many of the hand-made salamis and prosciutto are kept in caves in the Val d’Aosta for perfect temperature and humidity.

For bread lovers we have a full range of award winning, continental breads including Italian, Greek, Ukrainian and Estonian, some of which are organic. There’s also aged vinegars, olive oils, pasta, antipasti made with fresh vegetables straight from Italy. For those with a sweet tooth, chocolate made by Guido Gobino, an artisan chocolate maker who hand makes probably some of the finest chocolate in the world. He uses only the season's fresh hazelnuts from Piedmont and pure cocoa butter – this is chocolate like you’ve never tasted! We will also sell some stunning gifts including the most beautifully gift-wrapped Pannetone, complete with brocade and cashmere pashminas! All of this is just the tip of the iceberg!

The Salumeria also has a café with tables serving pastries and coffee in the mornings, all Italian of course and a range of traditional Italian dishes including pastas, seafood and Italian snacks all which you can eat in or take away. We have sourced some great meat and poultry from local Yorkshire farms in the area .

If you are the kind of person who really cares about the quality of the food which you and your family eat then we are confident you will love our Salumeria. Please call in to see us next time you are passing.
