A much-loved Leeds eatery has been crowned the best local Italian in the UK after cooking up a storm on Gordon Ramsay's The F Word.
The 33-year-old Salvo's Italian Restaurant and Salumeria in Headingley went head to head with Bristol-based Prosecco in the first episode of the new series of the cookery show last night.
Head chef Gip Dammone and second chef Chris Jackson, from the Otley Road bistro, cooked up a three-course meal for 50 diners in the special The F Word kitchen, in their bid for victory.
The lucky guests then had to choose whether to pay for the dishes - including a main course of pan-fried pork fillet in piquant wine vinegar.
Fourteen eateries in various categories will compete over the course of the series and the overall winner, named The F Word's Best Local Restaurant, will be revealed at a grand finale in January.
Salvo's was established by Gip's father Salvatore Dammone in 1976 and is now run by Gip and his younger brother John, 49.
Foul-mouthed celebrity chef Ramsay travelled the length and breadth of the UK, dining at eateries nominated by the public, to find the 14 who would battle it out on the Channel 4 show.
