Yorkshire Evening Post 30th October 2009

He's the celebrity chef famous for his foul mouth, harsh criticism and exceptionally high standards in the kitchen.

And next week, Gordon Ramsay's The F Word returns to our screens – with two chefs from Leeds battling it out to win a new prize.

Gip Dammone and Chris Jackson, head chef and second chef at Salvo's Italian Restaurant and Salumeria in Headingley, will take on Bristol-based Prosecco in the first episode of the new series on Tuesday.

Viewers will see Gip and Chris, both 23, cook a three-course dinner for 50 diners, including a starter and a dessert chosen by Gordon himself, as they compete for the title of The F Word's Best Local Restaurant.

Gip said his staff "jumped up and down and ran off to the pub" after winning praise from Gordon, 42, when he ate at Salvo's on Otley Road. Gip, 54, said: "We danced around, we got excited, we got frightened, then we laughed, and then we got confident, and then we got unconfident.

"Being in there (The F Word kitchen]…lots of love for Gordon. After he came in, saw all the chefs, and he said the food was great, it was heartfelt.

"It doesn't really get much better than being nominated for the best neighbourhood restaurant in the UK because that's exactly what Salvos is – it's a neighbourhood restaurant through and through."

After eating their meals, diners will then choose whether to pay for the three dishes, including Salvo's' own main course – pan-fried pork fillet in piquant wine vinegar.

Only 14 restaurants made it onto the new series, with the winner set to be crowned at a grand finale in January.

Salvo's was established by Gip's father Salvatore Dammone in 1976 and is now run by Gip and his younger brother John, 49.

Gip added: "Ramsay is really well respected amongst chefs who are passionate because we see the kind of guy he is.

"We've always considered ourselves as a neighbourhood restaurant so if we were to win it would be amazing."

He added: "My dad would be proud to see what we've done. It's for my dad as well."
