OFFICIAL! YORKSHIRE BIRDS ARE THE BEST!

At a time when cruelty to farm animals has a high profile in the media, a community in Leeds is going the extra mile to help improve the local fowl’s welfare.

Headingley Development Trust, an organisation that aims to promote and develop a sustainable community in the Leeds suburb, has created the Headingley Fowl Co op. The Headingley Fowl Co op pay a monthly fee in advance for Organic Free Range chickens that are reared at local award winning Swillington Organic Farm. The chickens are then delivered to the HDT stall at Headingley’s local farmer’s market for the members to collect.

Members of the Co op are welcome to visit the farm to see for themselves how the birds are reared and slaughtered.

John and Gip Dammone, of Salvo’s Restaurant, Headingley, have been supporting local farms and suppliers throughout their 32 years of business and are keen supporters of this new scheme. Both can be seen above collecting their chickens at the Headingley Market.

John commented,’ We have always strived to support local businesses in the community especially local farms, we have a weekly egg delivery from Cookridge based, Crag House Farm and are delighted to be part of this new venture with the Headingley Development Trust which we believe will be a huge success’.
