SALVO'S - A CROWD PULLING LEEDS INSTITUTION

Good Food Guide 2009

Headingley, a vibrant village just outside Leeds City centre, is best known for it’s cricket ground, but it’s real character lies in its melting pot of students and friendly locals.

They all know Salvo’s and this 30 year old Italian restaurant sits at the heart of the community. Waiting times can be over two hours and it speaks volume that people will still hang out in the bar while nearby restaurants remain half empty. And it’s much more than just pizzas - although you could never call it “ just pizza” . Mixed shellfish grill, wild mushroom risotto and slow roast lamb appear on the menu alongside specials such as chargrilled polenta with Gorgonzola and Confit of Duck leg with roast Sicilian fennel sausage and borlotti beans .

Though the main restaurant is the breadwinner, sister venue La Salumeria, a deli-café just a few doors down (107 Otley Road ), shows more daring and passion on its fixed menus than the staple of it’s sibling 9 perhaps it’s because it gets the personal attention of Gip and John Dammone who run this family business. This place is one to watch : reports please.
