SALVO'S - Jim Ainsworth

The Observer Magazine 20th January 2002

Salvo's 115 Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds, West Yorkshire.

Anywhere that serves deep-fried brie with raspberry vinaigrette is hardly going to be either cutting edge or convincingly Italian, but you may still have to queue to get into the Dammone family's 25-year-old pizza and pasta joint. Barbary duck and Italian sausage feature in one pasta dish, five cheeses in another, while among the 12 pizzas are a triple salami and an 'internazionale' (mozzarella, mushrooms and prawns). Still hungary? Try a folded pizza (calzone), perhaps the Kiev version containing chicken, ham, garlic butter and cheese.
