Entry to guest book : Dear Salvos I just wanted to send you an email to say thank you for the absolutely wonderful evening my husband and I had at your restaurant this week to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I have some wonderfully fond memories of Salvo's from the 1980s when we used to come on a Friday evening with my parents to eat the delicious pizzas cooked by the famous singing pizza chef - we loved him! I now have a family of my own and want to make the Salvos experience part of their memories too! My son is 6 in September and we are going to bring him for his first visit so he can experience what it is like to have a birthday at Salvos! Going back to our visit this week, we were treated like royalty by your wonderful staff which began with a couple of drinks in the new bar upstairs which felt more like being entertained in someone's house than in a restaurant. The barmaid (an Australian lady) was so wonderfully welcoming and friendly and served us some delicious tapenade. We then moved to our table which couldn't have been better as we were right in front of the kicthen and we were fascinated all night by what was going on in there - amazing! Our food and wine was heavenly and we ended the eveing again sat back upstairs relaxing in the bar. My husband and I enjoy eatinng out and I can honestly say that your restuarant is by far my favourite for so many reasons. Thank you again for a wonderful evening and many more to come. Don't change what you do as you do it brilliantly! Rachel Dixon

Entry to guest book : Last night we had a fabulous evening at Salvo's for my husband's birthday. We wondered if we were doing the right thing, (because it was a Monday and it might be a bit quiet) but as soon as we walked in the door at Salvo's we knew we had made a pefect decision. The place was buzzing, we were greeted immediately and were lucky enough to get a table straight away, we just happened to get there at the right time (7.30) because it was very busy for the rest of the evening. We shared a lovely light Pizza to start and my husband tried the soup, which he said was deliicious. We also, had main course and dessert. The presentation of the food was fabulous, I couldn't help taking a sneaky look at the other dishes coming out of the Kitchen it all almost looked too good to eat. Every morsal was the best food I have ever had in an Italian Restaurant. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. I was bothered about how much it would cost having read previous reviews, but in my opinion the whole evening was worth the every penny and good value for money for all FRESHLY prepared food. Now and again we like to go out for proper food. I cannot think of anything we didn't like!! FABULOUS - Thank you Salvo's We would certainly go again, next time I will take my friends with me.

We have had phone calls and letters from everyone who attended, saying how much they enjoyed the evening. Also, please thank Jacko for the fantastic food, it was stunning, very authentic and tasty - we feel very honoured having a "celebrity chef" cook for us! Thank you once again for a superb evening, please pass on thanks to all involved. We can't wait for another excuse for another party at Salvos! See you again soon. With our love John & Caro.

My husband who does not like waiting made us drive off and look elsewhere but there was nothing else my son fancied. We went back to Salvo's and are so glad we did the food was fantastic and was enjoyed by us all everything was perfect service included. We will definately return the next time we are in Leeds.

Entry to guest book : We traveled up from Buckinghamshire through the thick snow to see my in-laws for my birthday and I said I would like to go to Salvo's. Like many I tried to book a table for Saturday 9th Jan. When told bookings couldn't be taken but if I arrived about 7:00 - 7:30 I would probably have to wait about an hour. When we arrived at 7:15 and were told it would be nearer to a two hour wait we were very tempted to go into the city centre and try another establishment. However, after a couple of Peronis and Pinot Grigio for the girls we decided to stay.....and boy am I pleased we did. I cannot remember the name of the "maitre de" but he did everything possible to speed up a table for us (I should add there were 8 of us). He arranged chips for a youngster in our party and despite numerous people coming through the door kept a very methodical system and continuously kept us upto date. We ordered about 10 mins before we sat down and despite a slight delay with our starters the whole meal was enjoyed in a fantastic atmosphere. I had the Liver and having ordered it "pink" doubted in such a busy kitchen it would appear very rare. Needless to say it came cooked to perfection and was one of the best liver dishes I have eaten. We also had the two chicken dishes, one with artichokes the other with chillis, the flavours of both these were superb. I wont go on but we could not fault the food in any way and the portions were very generous. Like many people I am sure, I have never waited two hours to eat in a restaurant but I am so glad we did. With the singing waiters and waitresses serenading all those who were there for their birthdays we now have fantastic memories of Salvo's. The staff are friendly and efficient, the atmosphere electric and above all the food is of an extremely high standard. We will return....thank you Gip.

Entry to guest book : Salve!! My deepest and most joyous congratulations for your well deserved winning as The F Word's best Italian local restaurant! It would appear you at Salvo's are able, with delicious food full of flavour and Italian hospitality, to make every customer feel at home and enjoy their great meal in a family-like atmosphere!! This is what I look for when it comes to eating: I prefer authentic, great flavoursome food in the Italian tradition eaten in good, warm company than fancy though bland food that doesn't communicate anything, suitable for cold, posh dinners. You manage to transmit your joy and passion through what you serve, and I think that's what cooking (REAL cooking) is all about. Therefore I'm truly proud of your victory and will certainly come and visit as soon as I come back to England to enjoy some great Southern Italian meals (the best according to me, I might be partial but Northern Italian cooking just doesn't suit me, despite a few exceptions)! Complimenti! Keep up the good work!! Best regards from Lorena :):):)

Entry to guest book : John and Gip, Long time, no see fellas! Just watching from my safe European home in Lisbon, Portugal the name Salvo's just flash up in front of me on an episode of the the F Word for French cooking. Best Italian restaurant - Salvo's? It could only be one. Now let me be honest, it's a very long time since I've eaten in Salvo's; I've been living in Lisbon for 18 years, so you must excuse me. However, I recall getting a call from John one day, probably around 1989, inviting me to meet him at the restaurant to discuss an idea he had about a jazz night. At the time I'd been promoting and DJing a night called Downbeat, together with a couple of lads that went on to become Nightmares on Wax. We were pioneers of the early hip hop, house scene with a touch of jazz to throw in. Good times! In what can only be described as the best food I have ever eaten, John explained his ideas. In the end, nothing came of it but one thing stuck with me until this day, the lunch I had with John in Salvo's. It was that good. Maybe I should explain, I love to cook, almost as much as I love to eat; I've a library of cook books, traveled all over the world but my true love is Italian food. Part of my passion for cooking is the pleasure it gives to my family and friends and until today, I've never found a recipe that comes even close to the simple tomato pasta dish John served me that day. It is ironic that one of the greatest hip hop tunes of that time, Biz Markie's - The Vapors, has a line for you fellas... "Damn it feels good to see people up on it". You both deserve it. Keep the faith! Um grande abraço, (DJ) Mark PS: If you find my Swing Jazz triple boxset, let me know, it will be a good excuse to come over to Leeds and dine in Salvo's again.

TRANSLATED:

"I happen to travel often to talk about my wines in various parts of the
world. As a result I have been in many restaurants of all types, but in few
have I found the professionalism and true passion for good food than at
Salvo's. A Piemontese menu as authentic as this, one could only find in
Piemonte... an impeccable  " bagna cauda " that is impossible to find on
this side of the Alps. And what can I say more about the " tajarin con sugo
di fegatini di pollo " of which I had to have two plates of.

Truly grand are the Dammone brothers, with the passion for the research into
the particulars of food as they do with music, and in doing so create in
Leeds a unique and authentic corner of Italy. Thank you for the attention,
the meticulousness and the care in which to do things in the proper manner.”

Looking forward regular emails and returning in summer 2009 - and hope the sun shines next summer!!!! Ciao Karen O'Neil

It has such a good texture and is chewy - just like it should be and like I remember it before being coeliac. What a treat and thanks again. When you follow a gluten-free diet you miss so many tastes, textures and flavours from before, good pizza is something I had trained myself not to expect to eat again...but now I am sure I will be trying out lots of different toppings.

Getting variety into the diet is a problem so its good news when new products that is this good comes onto the market. Thanks also to Gip and the salumeria for introducing me to this and for best gluten-free pasta/menu during gluten-free awareness week.

The food was sublime, the atmosphere was great and the service was brilliant. Its so rare to be served by enthusiastic waiters who know and care such a lot about the food that they are serving. They are a credit to you and we were extremely impressed. We can't wait to get booked in for the next one. Thank you!

Entry to guest book : We lived next door to Mr and Mrs Dammone and family for a short time and I still iron my shirts the Nunzia way!  I celebrated my 16th Birthday at Salvo's and then my 17th and 18th followed by my 28th and 30th and then yesterday my 40th!!!  Despite our growing numbers you still managed to accommodate us and you were still all smiling at the end.  The Toolies all remembered Pinuccio and his singing and of course we were all really fond of Gip the Jeep and Johnny but Mums favourite was Lucci and my favourite was Salvo and I'm sure even though I am now 40 he would have still tousled my hair!!

Entry to guest book : Dear Salvo's - I came across your website by accident, when searching for Italian restaurants in London - and so many happy memories came back to me.  I visited Salvo's between 1976 and 78 - and loved it SO much.  I remember queuing in the freezing cold outside waiting for one of the precious tables - and Salvo coming outside to bring us drinks - so that there was a party outside as well as in.  I remember the friendship inside and sharing tables with strangers, and on Saturday and Sunday lunch times the wonderful mix of all ages of people - especially children and babies.  And, of course, the wonderful food and wine.  A resolution for 2008 is to visit Leeds and Salvo's again. Love from Jayne

Entry to guest book : My beautiful girlfriend and I visited Salvo's last saturday 26/01/08 and I can hand on heart say it is one of the best restaurants i have ever been to. We had to wait a while for our table, but we didn't mind this at all due to the friendly, helpful service and lovely atmosphere. The kitchen workers and floor staff all seemed relaxed despite a busy time. The floor staff did a fantastic job of making a birthday special. Although neither of us were celebrating ours, it certainly put a smile on our faces as we felt obliged to sing along to the unique celebrations. The food was excellent, and was good value for money. Overall an excellent experiance and we shall definitely return.

Thank you for all your hard work to make our wedding feast so sumptuous. The food was brilliant – everyone commented on it “It’s the best food I’ve had at a wedding”, sharing the starters was a stroke of genius and got everyone chatting.

Throughout the whole process of planning the food we found you to be personable, professional and creative as well as being incredibly thorough.

With so many other things to think about while planning the wedding it was wonderful to be able to entrust the food to you with complete confidence.

Thank you once again – you do a fantastic job.

Entry to guest book:Dear John & Gip,

I just wanted to thank you, and all your staff on the evening, for making Wednesday night such a great success. Everyone I’ve spoken to said how much they enjoyed the food, wine and the great atmosphere of the place. I also think you’re getting a bit good the ‘wine patter’; you’ll be putting Simon out of a job soon.

I though I’d pass on a few comments made by friends:

I think you get the gist…All the best and we’ll speak soon, Martin

Many said that they were certain to return! Anyway thanks again, for making everything so easy for me and for providing such an excellent dining experience for me and my guests.

Regards, Tom Burden

I realise it was just a small event by your standards, but done to the highest standard in terms of service and food quality. Entry to guest book: Many thanks for providing our group with such a magnificent experience at your restaurant yesterday evening. Apart from those who thanked me last night I have had several more calls today.

I think it reassures people (like myself even) who would not normally opt for an Italian meal, if venturing into a restaurant at all, that you and your staff do take our problem seriously. You have probably gained several more regular customers, and we are planning to ask you to do it all again, perhaps in the springtime. Please thank Gip, John and all the staff who looked after us last night - it was certainly very much appreciated.

Entry to guest book: We were delighted that Gip and John agreed to our request to host our Wedding Reception....a first for Salvo's (we think). The care they took in planning the menu based on their regional dinner menus with variations we requested ensured an evening to be enjoyed by all. The Salumeria provided a perfect family wedding venue bedecked by dazzling floral decorations provided by the 'in house' florist. Guests were welcomed at the Restaurant for a drinks and canapes at about 6.00pm before retiring to the Salumeria where ten (or was it eleven) superb courses satisfied the palates of a wide variety of discerning guests who continue to wax about 'the best wedding reception we've ever attended', 'we have not stopped telling our friends about the wonderful evening' and 'what sensational food and service'. Courses were perfectly timed and the wine flowed freely (one guest has commented that he only had "one glass all evening because I never had chance to empty it before it was refilled!!"). We all left the Salumeria at about 11.00pm having had a fantastic evening which marked the end of a wonderful day. Thanks to all the staff and Gip and John.

Entry to guest book:I would like to put on record how delighted I was to have Salvo's cater for my 50th birthday party at home, bringing absolutely everything necessary with them (plates, cutlery, glasses, coffee machine etc etc) to ensure a fantastic evening. From initial discussions about menus and organisation,  through to delivery and serving  of the food, and ensuring our guests were well supplied with wine etc to clearing up and washing up - EVERYTHING  was first class. Gip Salvo was incredibly helpful throughout, and Luke, the restaurant manager and waitress Karen served our guests with great style and humour.

IIt goes without saying, given it was Salvo's, that the food was quite superb - a fantastic array of antipasti, fresh seafood and other classic Italian starters, followed by 3 hearty and very generously portioned main coarses, all so very tasty, followed by luscious puddings and a cheeseboard. Our guests without exception, thought it the most fantastic evening, made very special by the care, attention and style of everyone involved from Salvo's. The presentation on the table of the food was so good I had to take photo's before everyone tucked in - it was that amazing! Above all it was Salvo's friendliness, enthusiasm and passion for good food and service that made it so memorable.
Many thanks to all concerned - it was wonderful to involve at home, my local Italian restaurant, where I have been going to eat off and on for the last 30 years, in my half century celebrations - I commend the idea to everyone else out there!

I remember putting on The Four Tops, The Steam Packet (Rod Steward, Long John Baldry, Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger Trinity).  We also had Joe Cocker's Big Blues who were absolutely stunning.  His fee was £15 but we only took £13 due to really poor weather... and had to send him a postal order.  Ah those were the days of real music!

Entry to guest book: Saturday lunchtime - where to go with the family? Instead of the tortuous trip to McDonald's, I thought it was time for Steven (our 5 year old son) to experience a more pleasurable environment at Salvo's.  He was kept happy with the opportunity to do some colouring whilst his Spag Bol was being freshly prepared and also enjoyed looking at the new mirrors.  Not only did he savour the food - somehow finding space for the pud - but the relaxed atmosphere allowed us to enjoy our superb dishes.  Judging by the number of other parents with children, the Kid's menu seems to be a great hit.

No toy included  - but definitely a happy meal!

Entry to guest book: Both my daughter (3 years) and I have coeliac disease (unable to eat gluten). Going to an Italian restaurant up until now would have been impossible until we found Salvo's. Not only are you able AND willing to cater for our needs (including pizza and pasta!) the food is delicious, unlike the majority of places who profess to provide gluten free food.

We can't thank you enough for such a pleasurable dining experience. We tend to avoid eating out as it's so stressful but certainly will be regular visitors at Salvo's in the future. Keep up the good work Gip and staff, your customer service was second to none!

Entry to guest book: Hi friends at Salvo's, just to say a very big thank you for all the pleasure you have provided over the 30 years we have been your customer. Without fail we can be sure of great food, prepared and served by people who care, and a very warm welcome however busy you are. Your policy of no-booking is well justified as you have so many people prepared to cope with that despite all the competition that now exists - because even the waiting is convivial.

The only complaint I have is you spoil us for going anywhere else - wherever we try, we keep returning to the all round quality and warm hospitality of the Salvo's experience. Your restaurant has given us many great evenings and now we can have an equally good, though very different, time at your Salumeria - the "regional" evenings are memorable. A measure of what you mean to the family is that now it is our grandchildren who want to go to Salvo's for their birthdays! Very many thanks, Mike Scally

Entry to guest book: Well!  How did Salvo's not win an award at the first annual Leeds Restaurants Association dinner last night(Nov 16)?  Nominated for 3 awards but not quite making it when the envelopes were opened.  Out of all of the 80+ restaurants in the association only 3 others had as many nominations - Plush, Anthony's and Casa Mia.

John, along with Martin Pickles from the Flying Pizza and John Pallagi from Room were the drivers behind creating the new Association and the tremendous success of the scheme within one year from inception deserves a special award for all of them.  It is not surprising that Conde Nast Travellor Magazine calls Leeds the 'Best city for restaurants'.
